Is It Time To Update Your CPR Training?

Do you have the basic knowledge and skills to safely and competently provide CPR in an emergency?

Motor vehicle accidents. Drowning. Electrocution. Falls from height. Drug overdoses. Sudden collapse.

If you are ever in a situation where providing CPR is required, unless you are an emergency responder or in-hospital medical professional, it is going to be unexpected and will require an immediate response.

Not only is CPR Training essential to knowing the correct approach to providing this potentially life-saving care to another person, but formal

CPR certification is valid in Australia for only one year. Moreover, the standards of CPR have changed markedly over time – what you may have been taught 10 or 20 years ago will likely no longer be best practice.

Practical knowledge of the correct CPR procedures could save a life.

What is CPR?

CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation can help save a life during a cardiac arrest, when the heart either stops beating or beats too ineffectively to properly circulate blood to the brain, lungs, and other vital organs. Provided properly, it makes it possible for a person to survive.

There Are Different Types of CPR:

  • Hands-Only CPR – Giving continuous, uninterrupted chest compressions.
  • CPR with Rescue Breaths – Combined chest compressions and rescue breaths to ensure adequately oxygenated blood is available to the patient’s brain and other vital tissues. This is more practical when there are two active CPR providers available.

CPR should be used when a person is unresponsive and not breathing, or is gasping and not able to breathe adequately. Whether cardiac compressions will be required depends on whether the heart is beating effectively or not.

CPR is not just an essential skill for healthcare professionals and emergency responders (paramedics, firefighters, police, SES). When a bystander (family member, coworker, or general public) provides CPR, the chance of survival can double or even triple. Without CPR in the event of a cardiac arrest, death is almost inevitable.

Why Update Your CPR Certificate?

  • You likely are not performing or practising CPR regularly.
  • CPR Guidelines and procedures change.
  • Emergencies happen when least expected.
  • CPR prevents brain death and reduces the risks of brain damage.
  • Every second counts in an emergency – and emergency services take time to arrive.
  • ANYONE can learn CPR.
  • It is an essential life skill for EVERYONE
  • CPR skills benefit any CV/resume.

(There is no legal requirement in Australia for bystanders providing CPR to be formally certified, however, some workplaces and other types of organisations require that their staff or members be trained in CPR.)

Regular renewal of CPR certification (and First Aid certification) is crucial as both CPR and First Aid guidelines are dynamic. It’s critical to be up to date with the latest techniques and skills. In an emergency, there is no time for hesitation.

CPR must be given competently, confidently, safely, and effectively – and regular training is the key to achieving this. Furthermore, the more bystanders who have this skill the better. Providing CPR is exhausting, and being able to share the practice with others while waiting for emergency services to arrive can make an enormous difference to the outcome.

How Has CPR Changed Over The Years?

CPR guidelines are reviewed regularly and they have changed a lot in the last several decades.

Only ten years ago, breathing was still widely considered the most important aspect of CPR. Now, chest compressions are emphasised over rescue breaths and the ratio is at most 2 breaths per 30 compressions. The recommended rate of chest compressions has almost doubled from what it was 30 years ago to 115-120 per minute for the greatest likelihood of successful resuscitation. The recommended best practice for how compressions are delivered (depth, recoil, and more) has also changed considerably.

Moreover, since the introduction of AEDs (automated external defibrillators) in 1995, CPR training must incorporate this technology into CPR and how to use it (where available) effectively and safely.

Only through updated training will best practices be maintained with the skills at your fingertips in an emergency.
