Benefits of Face-to-Face vs Online Training

Have you experienced the difference between online training and face-to-face training?

So many training providers are now almost exclusively offering online training. From first aid courses and RSA training to university degrees, the internet has opened opportunities and shifted the way we access learning, and the changes wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic have only cemented these.

This is not always a good thing.

Yes, there is indeed some benefit to being able to study remotely, in your own time, remaining at home, in your comfortable tracksuit or even your pyjamas. But that is, in many cases, where the advantages of online training begin and end, especially if you do not actually live in a remote or rural area.

A return to in-person learning is beneficial wherever possible – for all of us, from kindergarteners to seniors.

Online Training – More Cons than Pros

Despite its appeal, many people have now become quite weary of online learning, especially when the training in question has practical aspects to it.

Online or remote training exists to virtually impart knowledge. It is a flexible approach to learning where, in most cases, the learner or trainee logs online and completes lessons alone, on their own schedule, and at their own pace. On paper and from the outset, this may seem ideal – but its disadvantages are myriad.

Online-only training:

  • Can take a long time to complete
  • Must be 100% self-motivated
  • Requires a reliable internet connection
  • Provides little to no support – and certainly not in real-time
  • Delivers no human interaction or social benefit
  • Does not actively facilitate practical learning
  • Can quickly become tiresome
  • Has a relatively very low completion rate

The Benefits of Face-to-Face Training

Face-to-face or in-person training can be conducted in a one-on-one session or group setting. Less flexible than remote training, it occurs at a set time and place and is rarely accessible on demand. While this approach may not seem as immediately appealing as learning on-demand, online, and in the comfort of one’s own home, there are many more benefits than drawbacks to face-to-face training as we provide it here at Catch Training.

What type of learner are you?

  • Visual learners process information visually, needing graphics, charts, demonstrations, and images to learn.
  • Auditory learners benefit most when lesson content is spoken and prefer a lecture or discussion-based lesson format. They process information best through talking.
  • Read/Write learners absorb information via reading and consolidate it through writing notes.
  • Kinesthetic learners are tactile and learn best by “doing”, processing information through practising and recreating.

In-person training facilitates learning for all four types of learners. It reduces gaps in opportunities for different students and consolidates training through social interaction and cooperative learning.

With Face-to-Face Learning:

  • Training proceeds at a pace set by the instructor/trainer in a live interaction
  • Learners are accountable for their own progress by attending and interacting with the trainer and group
  • Learning alongside peers fosters active discussion and collaboration
  • Questions can be asked of the trainer and answered in real-time
  • Trainers can clarify and correct where necessary in real-time
  • Practical skills can be nurtured and practised in the presence of the trainer
  • Training is completed in the pre-set time frame
  • Certification is prompt
