Course description: This course is typically delivered to those working in Early Childhood education and care, however it is appropriate to a range of job roles providing services to children and young people including in community services and health. The course covers all aspects of the legal, ethical and duty of care responsibilities for working with children. Participants will walk away from this course with a clear understanding of how to create a workplace environment that cares for, and respects children and young people.  They will also learn about their responsibilities regarding the identification and reporting of abuse or neglect. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support and protect children and young people who are at risk of harm. This work occurs within legislative and policy frameworks and carries a duty of care responsibility.

Unit of competency: CHCPRT001 – Identify and respond to children and young people at risk

Course outcome: Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment in CHCPRT001 – Identify and respond to children and young people at risk.

Entry requirements: There are no entry requirements for this training course.

Course content:

  • Legislative responsibilities, service policies and procedures when working with children and young people.
  • Support the protection of children and young people in your workplace.
  • Observe signs and symptoms to Identify children and young people at risk of abuse or neglect.
  • Responding to disclosure, information or signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Creating a work environment which  employs child focused work practices.
  • Using effective communication and information gathering techniques with children and young people.
  • Reporting indications of possible risk of harm or neglect.
  • Protecting the rights of children and young people in your workplace.
  •  Applying ethical and nurturing practices for children and young people in your workplace.

Assessment requirements: To pass this training you will need to complete a written or verbal assessment and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.  However no pre-course revision is required as your Catch trainer will teach you everything you need to know on the day.

  • One form of photo identification. Ideally an Australian driver’s licence or your passport.
  • Blue or black pen.
  • Please arrive 15-minutes before the scheduled start time.
